Change of pace… Blackfishing with Justin and Josh

Since the beginning of 2012, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been out fishing socially with my mates.  My program has been full with tournaments, and since January, I’ve travelled to Victoria twice (Marlo and Mallacoota), The Derwent in Hobart, St Georges Basin, Lake Macquarie, Forster, Port Macquarie and Bribie Island.

The beginning of November will see me back in QLD for the Classic Grand Final with Dave Poulton on the Gold Coast and then to Bribie again for the BREAM Grand Final.

One of the sales reps that comes to see me at work mentioned that he’d had some good success on the Blackfish in recent weeks, and talking to Justin last week he mentioned to me that we actually hadn’t been out for a fish together this year… So we made plans to go for a Blackfish session on Sunday with Josh.

Although I’ve caught a lot of Blackfish over the years, they’ve all come as by catch targeting bream on lures.  I’ve never actually gone out to specifically target them, using weed and floats.  Josh has in the past without a great deal of success. Its something that’s been on my to do list for a while, so it was up to Justin to put us onto the fish.  He managed to get good weed during the week so we were set.

It was a beautiful morning Sunday – a continuation of the warm spring weather that we’ve been experiencing in Sydney, and starting at a leisurely 7am, we were fishing 10 minutes later as we waited for the incoming tide.

The bite wasn’t hot by any means, but between the conversation, we got enough “downs” and fish to keep us interested.  It was a relaxing morning, and quite honestly I really enjoyed the change of pace.

  1. Blackfish/Luderick have to be one of the most under-rated fighting fish in the sea – and also one of the tastiest, if treated correctly! They fight hard & dirty & when you get a 40cm+, you know you’ve earned it. Great fun on light line. AND …… they are there ALL YEAR ROUND, not just in winter! 🙂

    • Hi Roberta – how have you been? Yes certainly had fun on the Blackfish. It was nice to slow it down a bit. How do you go getting weed in the summer though?
