Preparations have begun

The Bream Classic Grand Final is a week away, with the BREAM GF following the week after.  These will be my first ever Grand Finals after many years of competing, so to say I’m excited is an understatement, and my preparations are well and truly under way.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the boat and trailer serviced, and done some general maintenance to ensure she’s as reliable as can be on my trip to QLD.  I’ve had the gearbox off the motor as well to repair my damaged skeg from that embarrassing mishap in the Pumicestone Passage at Bribie Island a couple of months ago.  You can rest assured that I’ve got the “Beacon to Beacon” packed as well, and I might read it more carefully this time.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about, read my post about my prefish at Bribie that I spent on a sandbank waiting for the tide to float me again… Guys and Girls, if you’re from interstate I recommend you get yourself a copy of the Beacon to Beacon publication.  It might save you from some embarrassment and also some damage to your beloved boat.

My tackle is packed, and I’ll have a new rod and reel combo to use courtesy of Daiwa for this trip.  I chose the  Daiwa TDX 6101ULFS Rod and Daiwa Caldia 2000 Reel spooled with 3lb Daiwa Finesse Brave Fluoro carbon.

Remember that it will be auctioned on Ebay at the end of the finals series with another 4 combos used by Chris, Josh, Steve Morgan and Kris Hickson as well as a brand new Hobie Mirage Outback Kayak generously donated by Steve Fields at Hobie Cat Australasia.  All the money raised from this auction will be donated to the NSW Cancer Council as part of our Do Your Thing appeal.

Perhaps the biggest piece of preparation though has been the installation of my new Power-Pole.  I settled on the 10 foot Blade model, that I ordered from Josh Batterson at  Skeeter Australia. Josh and Matt did a neat install for me and tidied up the bilge area of the boat while they were at it.

I had a quick session with it on Sydney Harbour last week while I fished some of my favourite pontoons up the Lane Cove River. This was the first time I’ve been Bream fishing since August, and the first time I’ve been out on Sydney Harbour since about May.  It was great to get amongst them again! The control the Power-Pole afforded me in the strong winds we’ve been experiencing here in Sydney was quite remarkable.  I’m really looking forward to giving it a good run in QLD.

  1. Good luck Greg. Keen to hear what you think of the Daiwa TDX 6101ULFS Rod. I have 2 and am really enjoying the crisp blank and action. Great power for a 1-2kg.
