Sucks to be a prawn: Part 2 – Words and Images by Steve Teale

Well .. on to the tying!

As I said in PART 1, Darren “Fishnuts” Evans has a great 2 Part video clip giving very clear directions and helpful tips. I’m a bit rusty at the vice but found that even I could churn out fishable flies. Thanks Dazz!

These are the O’Shaughnessy hooks used to make this particular fly Mustad S71SZ-34007 2XH/1XL Size 1/0

The Mustard hooks that Dazz mentioned have changed number  (refer to the photo) and I highly recommend getting hold of the carapace cutters as it is far easier than cutting a template. As well as those, I also bought prawn/crab eyes rather than making glass bead/mono eyes..Just lazy I guess!

I have found it hard to find the small plastic squid in good colours to match the prawn fly and I am still looking. My local tackle shop has pink and white and I’ve tied some with white legs but I’m not really happy with them. I also bought some LOCO LEGS, sometimes called SILLY LEGS and tied in some olive coloured ones that look okay and give some movement, I’m just not sure they will be as durable as the squid legs – I’ll keep looking.
All the materials I needed, I bought online at http://www.flyworld.com.au.  A bloke called Nick was very helpful.
Happy tying … now to go out and throw a few around. ‘Til next time.
Tight lines, Steve Teale
