The October long weekend just passed marks the official commencement of the New South Wales boating season. New South Wales Police Marine Area Command, maritime boating safety officers and New South Wales fisheries have joined forces across New South Wales as part of Operation Viking Marine. This is an initiative to increase on water safety and compliance by increasing their presence on the waterways enforcing maritime laws, conducting safety and license checks as well as inspecting size and bag limits of catches.
Now is probably a timely reminder to ensure that your marine equipment is in check and compliant. Whether it be organising your annual servicing, checking your safety gear and equipment, refreshing yourself on the rules and requirements on water, familiarising yourself with the waterways you will be on or casting a general eye over your boat, trailer and equipment for your own piece of mind.
A stack of information is available on the NSW Police, Roads and Maritime Services and Department of Primary industries websites. I know that this time of year means that the couple of inflatable PFD’s I do own are due for inspection/servicing. You can also click here for a number of maintenance articles we have published.
Take your time, do your checks and stay safe.
