High Alert for Eucumbene

Well its that time of the year again. It’s become one of those things I start to watch really closely and every six hours or so I’m checking all the weather sites for updates. For me, the best fishing is the first large lake Trout that move into the river. They tend to be the larger males looking to stake out the best breeding spots. They are fighting fit and carry a lot of weight. You won’t get as many but you will get the fight of your life. If you want sheer numbers of fish the last few weeks of the season is the time to go but the fish tend to be in a pretty poor state having lost a lot of the beautiful colours for a sickly looking grey and the solid muscle has become a bit flabby and soft.

The first fish move in with the first rains around the middle of April. I made a quick exploratory trip last week to see where it was at and I did see a few “smaller” fish (2 or 3 pound fish as compared to the 4 to 10 pound fish I’m waiting for) but it needed the rain before it will really kick in. Well as of today it looks like they will get 50-60mm of rain over the next few days which might turn it on.

So the prep has begun. I’ve been pre-tying rigs and ordered all the bits and pieces I need. Watch this space, I should be there in the next few days.
